Cleaning Up Endocrine Disruptors in Your Beauty Products

When choosing a new beauty or haircare product, probably the last thing on your mind is to check whether it has any endocrine disruptors amongst its ingredients. Should you check out the ingredient list before you buy? We think so!

What are endocrine disruptors? They are chemicals which interfere with the endocrine system. The endocrine system is the group of glands in your body which are responsible for hormone production. These hormones assist with biological processes such as reproduction, metabolism and sleep.

We are so concerned about endocrine disruptors because they can affect the balance of our hormones. This can lead to various health issues including problems with our reproductive system, the thyroid and may even cause cancer!

Endocrine disruptors are often hidden in cosmetic and beauty products, in fact it is very likely that they are contained in products you keep in your bathroom right now.

So, what should you be looking for? We can’t provide you with an exhaustive list, but here are some of the main culprits:

Parabens

Parabens are found in a range of beauty products, particularly shampoo and makeup. It’s relatively easy to spot parabens as the word paraben often forms part of the name of the ingredient. This is a well known endocrine disruptor.

Phthalates

These are often found in products such as perfumes, makeup and nail polish, and can be listed as DBP, DEP or DEHP. This a well known carcinogenic (causing cancer).

Synthetic colors and fragrances

We all love our beauty products to look and smell nice, but at what cost? Obviously, these will be found in perfumes and all types of make-up. Many endocrine disruptors are hidden behind the word fragrance as a catch all. Are well know to cause skin irritation and allergies.

SLS (Sodium Laureth Sulphate)

Often found in shampoo, SLS can be harmful and is considered carcinogenic. It’s best to look for SLS free haircare products. This is a well know carcinogenic.

Endocrine disruptors tend to have many different names, you practically need a degree in microchemistry to be able to decipher the list of ingredients on the back of the bottle. We recommend checking with this beauty product data base,  Skin Deep to avoid toxic beauty products.
