Love The Skin You Live In

Have you ever stopped to really think about the amazing job your skin does? It protects all those delicate parts of your body, like bones and internal organs. It keeps you cool, but also helps you stay warm, by protecting you from the elements. Let’s face it, your skin doesn’t always receive the recognition it should.

In order to treat skin well, we need to know how it works and what it requires to maintain optimum health. Your skin is made up of 3 main layers, the Epidermis, the Dermis and the Subcutaneous Layer or Hypodermis.

The Epidermis is the layer that is visible to us, and generally the layer where most skincare products like moisturizer and sunscreen do their magic. It’s made up of many thin layers and helps to keep our skin dry and also gives us our skin tone color.

The Dermis is the second layer, found directly beneath the Epidermis. This is where Collagen lives and gives your skin its elasticity and flexibility. This layer is also composed of nerves and fibrous tissue and is home to our sweat glands, and also where acne and wrinkles start!

The third and final layer is deep within your skin and is known as the Subcutaneous Fat Layer or the Hypodermis. Obviously, this is where fat is maintained, which is important to protect your bones and organs. This layer of skin is also responsible for connecting bones and muscle to your skin layers, and your body temperature is also controlled here.

It’s interesting to note that skin products you use will only penetrate the top two layers of your skin, the Epidermis and the Dermis, with many products sitting on the Epidermis.

So next time you cleanse your face or shower your body, why not celebrate the wonder of your skin, after all it’s the largest organ of the body, doesn’t it deserve plenty of love and attention?
